When Abby reached the top of the stairs, she followed the sounds of the shower to the master bedroom. The door to the bathroom was cracked, the humid scent of the steam growing thicker as she moved into the room.

She'd been here before, after Mikel, and it still struck her about how everything in Gibbs' house was either tactical or practical. The living room was arranged tactically; the furniture could be used as cover if anyone tried to get in through the front door. The bedroom, on the other hand, was more practical; the furniture was self-assembled department store fare, more functional than decorative, but she knew that if she opened any of the dresser drawers, they would be oiled into silence.

She saw photos tucked into the mirror at his dresser, and as she got close, she almost smiled. Even his photos were organized.

On the left were a few candid photos of the team, obviously taken during crime scene investigations. Tim, Tony, Ziva, Ducky...the smile turned into a grin as she saw the one of her in her Marilyn costume.

The smile disappeared when she saw the other side of the mirror, and the photos of Kate and Pacci, especially when there were no other photos on display. Nothing of Shannon or Kelly, just his current 'family'.

Everything she'd brought up to him was a moment he didn't protect her. I may as well have shoved these pictures in his face. She wished she had Bert to hug as she headed back to the bed, pulling the covers up to her chin. The sound of the water lulled her into a half-doze, the scent of his soap strong on the pillow as she realized with a wry twist of her lips that this was his side of the bed. As if I didn't feel guilty enough. She sighed, opting not to move as she closed her eyes. In for a penny...

--She dreamed of the sound of a bullet striking too close, of Gibbs' arms around her, promising bulletproof-then-resistant glass, both of them still grieving for Kate as he promised to keep her safe.--

--She dreamed of Gibbs' arm around her as they sat in the elevator, holding her as he promised that nobody was going to hurt her.--

--She dreamed of Gibbs' smile when he saw her standing over the hitman, taser in one hand and brass knuckles in the other. That same smile again, as she stood over Chip's duct-taped body.--

--She dreamed of Gibbs' arms around her, choking on exhaust as he pulled her from Otto. You never have to ask, Abby.--

--She saw the quiet determination in Landon's eyes as he cocked the hammer back on the pistol.--

She thrashed her way free of the sheets, and an instant later she felt Gibbs' arms around her, holding her steady as the nightmare faded. "Easy, Abbs. I gotcha."

The tears came more from the gentle reassurance than from the earlier fear, but she trembled from both as she buried her face in his neck. "I'm sorry, I didn't know what I was thinking or saying and I was so scared--!"

He held her through it all, his body warm and solid and smelling of his soap, as warm as his hand stroking up and down her back as she tried to get herself back under control. She almost missed it as her tears subsided to hiccups, but felt it whispered into her hair. "So was I."

He hadn't been there when Pacci was killed. He hadn't been in a position to protect Kate, but he'd been right there when Landon had pointed his gun at her. As she drew back to look at him and he brushed the tears from her cheeks with his thumbs, she saw the lingering fear that he would have to move her photo from one side of the mirror to the other.

She wasn't sure who started it, but his arms slid around her once again, his lips warm on hers as the kisses quickly deepened. Warm. Solid. Safe. She pressed closer to him with a soft moan, chasing his lips as this time he drew back, cupping her face in his hand again.

She touched her finger to his lips to silence the protests she knew were coming, meeting his eyes with a soft "Please..." She didn't want this to stop, not now, not when she had just started to feel safe.

This time he didn't pull away when she leaned in, twitching his lips away from her finger to meet hers again, his sigh a growled harmony with her own.

She fell asleep later with his arms still around her, his body between her and the door. Still the tactician, even sweaty and sated.
