Fangirling...

This has been tapping at my brain, hoping that one day I'd be awake enough and have the time to write about it.
I've been watching the first season episodes of Smallville that are on ABC Family, and I'm so glad I decided to give the show a chance and not blow it of as "90210 with Superman". It's so nice to see characters that, while have a main motivation, are more than "intrepid reporter", "best friend" and "loving parents". These are people with issues and problems of their own, both in their lives and how they relate to Clark. Pete gets jealous of Clark's abilities and how Chloe puppies after Clark. Chloe gets frustrated with Clark keeping secrets and how he puppies after Lana. Clark's parents fight over finances and try to balance their hate/mistrust of the Luthors with Clark's friendship with Lex.
It's a more complex show than I'd ever thought it would be, and I love it, but there's one character that I've come to particularly love specifically because he doesn't fit the mold that he is supposed to fit.
Whitney Fordman.
Golden boy looks, confidence, captain of the football team, Lana's boyfriend and Clark's rival. He's arrogant, he's hot, he makes Clark the Scarecrow in the pilot episode. In any other show, he'd be the character that you'd LOVE to hate. He'd be a caricature of the asshole jockboy, and you'd CHEER for Clark to try and get Lana away from that blond bastard.
Except he's not. Every time you want to hate him, he does something that proves he's human and not just 'villain'.
- He tries to apologize to Clark for the scarecrow thing.
- Lana goes out on a half-date with Clark and doesn't tell Whitney, and when he finds out he tries to be mature about it in the face of his girlfriend going out with a guy he KNOWS likes her.
- He acts like a complete shitheel to Lana, and you want to hate him AGAIN. Then you find out that his father's in the hospital and he doesn't know how to handle it, and doesn't want to tell Lana because he doesn't want to bring back memories of her losing her parents.
- He tries to make him and Lana work so hard, and keeps getting dicked around because Lana can't make up her frickin' mind.
- His last words to her before he ships off to the Marines are a declaration of love, and that he'll come back to be with her when his tour is over.
In short, he's written as a HUMAN and not just "some guy for the fans to hate". The writers made me love him, like a rural Everyman. I want to write for him, and will when I get the time.
Now, however, I just wanted to softly sing his praises.

Hm. Must think on this.
